SEC Spanish Consortium Spotlight on Mississippi: Latinos, Cultures and Languages

Please join us for a public symposium bringing together scholars and community members to explore the past, present, and future of Latinos and Spanish in Mississippi. Over the past three decades, Mississippi has emerged as a new destination for Latino populations. This symposium creates a space for dialogue about the social, cultural, linguistic, and public health dimensions of this transformation.
Keynote: Dr. Angela Stuesse “Scratching Out a Living: How the Poultry Industry’s ‘Hispanic Project’ Transformed Mississippi”
Hands-on workshop: Dr. Monique Henderson “Educating bilingual children and Latinos in Mississippi schools”
Bilingual Printmaking Workshop with Frank Estrada

Center for the Study of Southern Culture, University of Mississippi
Join us for a bilingual, Latino-themed printmaking workshop led by artist Frank Estrada. Designed for students, families, and community members, this hands-on event will introduce participants to relief block printmaking in an accessible and creative environment. A number of pre-cut designs will be available to facilitate the process, while those who wish to carve their own original block will have the opportunity to learn and create from start to finish.
Community Celebration: Food, Music & Family Activities
April 19, 2026 | 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Old Armory Pavilion – 1801 University Ave., Oxford, Mississippi
Celebrate Latino cultures and community at this free, family-friendly gathering featuring food, music, and interactive activities for all ages. All community members are welcome! The afternoon will include a community soccer game, piñatas every hour, and live music from a local band. Families will also be able to connect with local organizations through informational booths.
